Our school is close to two military bases and many of my students are the children of deployed military personnel. The school they attend is an older, urban public school in the largest city in the largest state in the United States.
All of my students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch but we are not a Title I school that means that my wonderful first graders have all of the needs and few of the resources that are available to other low income children.
My first graders are struggling to learn the basics---math, reading and science. Nearly half of them receive services for ESL, Special Education and Indian Education (JOM). Most of my class are below grade-level but they love being in school because they love learning. Their smiles melt my heart.
My Project
I have wonderful students but they are handicapped because the majority of them do not have access to technology outside of school. Our school district is caught in an economic downward spiral.
We don't even have funding for school supplies and the technology are forced to use is aging.
We do not have any chromebooks in our classroom and we have to sign up to use the shared computers in the lab for 30 minute slots once a week.
My students love technology but they rarely get to use it even though our district has online math programs they need to access on a daily basis.
Many of my students struggle with math and suffer from innumeracy. They need the tools that will help them become successful. I am requesting one chromebook so they can access our district's online math program. I am also asking for some headphones and tape for our new classroom math center. My students will use these everyday for math projects.
If my first graders are going to learn about math, they are going to need the help of donors. Our district does not have the funds for the resources I am requesting. I need this Acer computer so my students can have access to online math programs. I am excited for my students to learn the skills that will carry them through school.
