“The only way to learn mathematics is to do mathematics.” Paul Halmos A typical hour during math instruction is using every minute available to encourage, inspire and instruct my students. Our materials are good, but I need these supplies to make instruction and practice GREAT!
My students are a wonderful mixture of abilities, personalities, challenges and emotions.
During math my students are energetic. They are full of life. They LOVE school and take every challenge I set before them and meet it. If I ask them to try something new, there is very little resistance. They love to play and explore together. these materials will allow them to do that everyday. Many are fearless, yet I struggle to provide them multiple tools to explore mathematical practices to the depth that will advance their thinking. K-4 we have 360+ students. This year in Kindergarten we have smaller class sizes, but larger needs. We have an excellent support staff that assist in any way we request, and spend several hours a week collaborating with teachers to make sure we are meeting our students where their needs take them. My school is the GREATEST environment to work in. I think our unique environment is 1 reason our students succeed like they do.
My Project
With these math materials they will thrive during math exploration time. They will use the magnetic boards during small group instruction and station work. Students are used to making their ten frame look like mine, but they struggle to keep their answer, because our manipulative slide off. With these magnetic boards they will be able to show what they know with ease. They will use the large dominoes during station work time and build number sense while learning socials skills for working together. I love the idea of letting them move around and work to build connections with these large dominoes. Several of my students struggle with fine motor skills, so providing them with these will enhance their gross-motor skills first, and slowly enhance their fine-motor skills. They will use the smaller dominoes and dice individually. I have a lot of activities for them to complete independently to show me where their knowledge of number sense is.
Donations will improve my students’ production of math instruction.
They will see the materials as fun things to play with, but I know and you know, they are really building multiple strategies to think and produce numbers. Kindergarten is the foundation to a LONG educational career. My goal is to provide students with the essential tools to know their full mathematical potential. They will have success beyond the 4 walls of my classroom, and take the knowledge from Kindergarten and expand it.
