My third grade students are creative, thoughtful, and love learning! They are enthusiastic about math every day. During a lesson, they have a chance to use hands-on materials and whiteboards to solve problems and show their thinking. My students are very curious, and math tools/manipulatives help them explore and figure out problems. My classroom is very diverse, which includes many English Language Learners. Therefore, incorporating tools will help with grasping the skills being taught, as well as showing me whether or not they are understanding. There are many different abilities, so it's important to have tools to help students reach their individual goals.
Our school is located in an urban area, so many of my students face challenges at school and at home.
However, even with all the challenges, they amaze me with their determination and perseverance daily. They truly inspire me!
My Project
My students love learning! One of their favorite times of the day is math!
The first thing we do is get out our math tools that help make complex tasks easier, as well as help keep my students more engaged.
We need new materials as well as replacing old or broken ones. We need updates to help us continue to be successful. Other materials are just ones that need replenished frequently, such as dry erase markers and erasers. The student whiteboards are very important for student learning because they can show their thinking and write out problems to solve. Also, they help the teacher to assess each student quickly! Students use the counters to help solve multiplication and division problems, and they also use them for many math games that we play to reinforce math skills every day. We use the flash cards to practice math facts that are necessary to know with fluency for a good, strong foundation, so that students can successfully build on other math concepts. Many of the manipulatives are used in classroom lessons, math games, and math centers to help practice and develop their math skills. Also included in the project is a set of cube containers to help organize all the math materials.
