My Students

My students are suburban middle schoolers, navigating that tough stage of life. For many of them, a band is a refuge that helps them through!

Playing an instrument and learning musical skills is of high interest to my students, and they work hard to achieve and improve.

We have three levels of band: beginning, intermediate, and concert, and some students also participate in an additional jazz band class. I become quite close with my students over the three years they are with me and I desire to provide them with what they need to learn.

My Project

Teaching band can be an isolating experience. I don’t regularly have the opportunity to see other band programs in action, and professional development in my field isn’t provided by my district. I already have registration covered, and in this project, I am requesting the cost of food while attending the Midwest conference.

The Midwest Band conference is the premier professional development for band directors, helping me learn new and effective rehearsal strategies and ways to make my band room a more inclusive setting for all students.

The sessions offered at this workshop also help me with management of the band program, including finances. Thus, I am given an opportunity to teach my students financial literacy from the perspective of a band program, its needs, and how they are funded.

I look forward to learning from clinicians from around the country, observing rehearsals, and watching techniques in action that will give me strategies to work with all of my students, especially those with unique learning needs. Including them in the band program is important and very worth the investment.
