I teach in an urban area school district in New Jersey. My students confront all of the challenges typically associated with this type of community. I invite you to put aside any preconceptions of the hardened disinterested innercity child as I enlighten you of their genuine kindness and caring. Despite the challenges, heartaches, and disappointments many of them have had to endure in their young lives, they treat each day as a blank slate and come to class excited to get to do over and make it better than before. They come each day full of questions. There is so much they want to learn and understand. Their persistence is more than just admirable and I fell compelled to do all I can to match it. They are the reason I ask for your help.
We have been learning about creating a sustainable planet and the importance of plants. Since last year we have been working on various garden projects. We were so excited for spring to come to see the results of our hard work. However, we noticed that whenever we would leave in the evening and come back the next day some of our plants have been used as food for the neighborhood animals.
While we understand the roles plants play in the food chain, we would like for our plants to have a chance to grow to be more than a food source for Bambi and his buddies.
We have hope that these little seedlings will become gorgeous gardens that will add beauty, pride, and a sense of community to our school. These fences will help protect our garden, especially while we're away and unable to care for them each day.
