Intermediate School 125 is located in the Castle Hill section of the Bronx in New York City. I am an eighth grade Humanities teacher. The majority of our students are at or below poverty level. The free breakfast and lunch programs service 100% of our student body. The majority of our students are from single parent homes who are either getting by with one income or benefiting from government assistance. Therefore, when I asked my students on the first day of school to purchase a dictionary, since our school cannot afford to provide each student with a text to use at home, many parents were financially unable to do so. In order for students to move on to high school they need to be able to write more fluently. A dictionary will increase their vocabulary, reinforce dictionary and research skills and enforce good writing habits. I have 110 students in three classes. I would like each student to have a dictionary. The text is to remain at home with the child to use as a reference for their Humanities homework as well as any other subject area. Again, this reaffirms the importance of research as a cross-curriculum skill. A class set of each text (35 dictionaries and thesauri) will remain in the classroom for in school use.
