My students need 24 headphones to listen to an online financial literacy class.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Part of the 8th grade curriculum is EverFi, an online financial literacy class. EverFi is made up of 10 modules and each student works at his/her own pace. At the conclusion of each module, the student is tested on the material and he/she moves on to the next module if he/she makes 70 or more.
The vast majority of my students come from bad home environments, particularly for education purposes.
Most of my students are economically disadvantaged and participate in the free lunch program. My students' parents either are unemployed, or they work 2-3 jobs to make it. Many of them do not have transportation, so parent involvement at the school is extremely limited. We live in North Carolina and current budget cuts have been severe. Many schools have very good PTO/PTA involvement but not at our school for reasons I've already mentioned. Although factors are against them, my students are still eager to learn.
EverFi provides life-skills type information that is vital in today's society. The vast majority of my students will never hear the difference between a checking account and a savings account discussed at the family dinner table. Other questions like "How do you use a debit card?" or "What is the difference between simple interest and compounded interest?" would never come up at home either. As a matter of fact, most of my students do not even eat as a family which most of us cannot identify with.
As I have already mentioned, this project is very important because financial literacy is vital in today's society.
However, in order to use EverFi, good and durable headphones are needed so that students can learn independently and individually. The knowledge obtained will probably be a part of them for the rest of their lives. Can you imagine living in 2013 and not having a bank account? Some people live that way. Support this project and perhaps we will have fewer people like that.
