My students need 28 low level/high interest books, such as those from the "Bluford High" Series and others, like "Diary of a Stinky Dead Kid" to support reading and their work on their computerized literacy program.

My Students

My students are low level achieving 6th and 7th graders which can't quite read fluently on a 4th and 5th grade level. The students work in a computer program to help with high frequency words as well as reading comprehension. There is time after the class finishes their tasks to read, however I don't have enough books.

Ours is a very urban school with high poverty rates and often lacking "extra" funding.

Students and teachers are trying to close the academic gap and I believe are making significant progress. Unfortunately, our students aren't able to take a drive to Barnes & Noble or Walden's Bookstore to pick out and purchase a new book. Their parents can't afford the "extras".

My Project

These low level readers are working SO hard on improving their reading ability with identifying/understanding new vocabulary, as well as fluency, and their comprehension. There will be opportunities to perform "book previews"; I may model fluency or even have a student volunteer to read the first chapter of a new book enticing other students to borrow it next. We want to be able to talk about situations they encounter through reading and not leave idle time to just sit and wait for the next bell to ring. These low level readers need to experience the accomplishment of reading an entire book or complete series to boost their confidence.

As educators we are always challenged to get students reading.

As a first year teacher I don't have a big enough collection for all my students yet. Children need literacy confidence and access to as many books as possible to engage and inspire them. Students are not low level readers for life if we catch them now (middle school) and hone their interest and encourage their love of literacy.
