Middle School Rite of Passage - My Student Want In!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is very new in Houston, and just opened to 5th graders last year. This coming year, we're adding 6th grade, and will keep going until we serve 5th-8th grade. I just joined the team as a new 6th grade teacher, and I already feel the incredible family-like atmosphere in this school - students, parents, and staff are all warm and welcoming, and it is a community that comes together to grow and develop together. I'm extremely excited to join this community and get to know everyone in it, and to work with my amazing students! The few I've already met are excited for school to start!
I am extremely grateful for the incredibly generous community I've witnessed through Donors Choose, and will make sure that I emphasize with my students that there are amazing people out there kind enough to fund their supplies, meaning there are people out there rooting for them and their education!
My Project
The frog or cow eye dissection is an iconic middle school science lab that many remember into adulthood! My students have been asking with excitement if we will get to do a dissection this year. I would love to be a life science teacher and do these hands-on labs all the time, but in sixth grade, our curriculum doesn't include it and we don't have the materials for it!
Our very last unit of the school year will be Living Organisms, in which students will get a basic introduction to cells and living systems in preparation for seventh grade.
It would be amazing if I could provide my students with a hands-on experience of a lifetime and lead them in dissecting a simple organism like a fish or frog. This kit of dissection tools will be the first step in providing my students with this amazing opportunity that will engage them in learning about living systems!
