Help me give my students plants and growing kits for butterflies, specifically monarchs . To encourage compassion for animals, we are installing a monarch way station at our school that will allow students to observe and collect data.
Our school is located on the Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland. We are a Title I school with a high percentage (approximately 70%) of students living at or below the poverty level. Our school is a small, rural community school with fewer than 400 students in grades 4-8.
Despite the many challenges my students face, they are eager to learn.
My students are always super excited to come to my class and I am eager to present them with thoughtful, engaging science content. Science is best learned in context, by doing and experiencing things. DonorsChoose.org provides me with the materials I need to make this happen.
We are small but mighty. We have a lot of school spirit and it really is a great place to spend my time. We are very active in the community and focus on building positive relationships both in and outside of the school setting.
My Project
Most children are accustomed to treating domesticated animals with compassion. All of the animals on the planet need a little compassionate treatment.
The goal of this project is to establish a monarch way station at our school by planting various species of milkweed and installing features to attract butterflies.
We will be collecting any caterpillars we find and using the critter chambers to keep them safe from predators during metamorphosis. The butterflies will be released into the same area the caterpillars were taken from.
My students will be able to observe all of the stages in the life cycle of a butterfly and have an emotional stake in seeing them released. Hopefully this will encourage them to become stewards of the animals they find in their own yards.
