My Students

I teach a small group of students in an alternative middle school program. My program has been around for about 10 years. Since the beginning, the structure has been changing, with the students and their education being at the center. The program began as a 1/2 day program to provide intervention to students in need. This is the first year that the program has been hosted all day.

My total program size remains between 14-17 to ensure that small group and individual education can be given.

I teach math and science, along side of an English and social studies teacher. My entire program is focused on meeting the students where they are at and getting them to where they need to be.

My curriculum is tailored to each student. At one time, no two students are working on the same material at once. My students who struggle with academics are benefiting from the one-on-one teaching opportunities in my program. Many of my students also come from tough backgrounds. My predecessor put it in a very nice way, "All of the kids are amazing, but you would not want to go live at their homes."

My Project

In my class, we meet the students where they are at academically and push them to where they need to be. I find that I spend a good portion of my time reviewing mathematical concepts with students, such as multiplication or even addition and subtraction. I would love the ability to make several sets of flash cards with facts or review materials for my class. At the current time, flash cards just would not last. If I had a laminator in my classroom, I would be able to create many sets of flashcards to help my students learn.
