The mention of a middle school cafeteria often causes people to shudder: loud talking, out of control students, screaming teachers. The cafeteria at KIPP Gaston College Preparatory has nothing of the sort. Many students have discovered the joy of challenging their brains (and their friends) to educational games at lunch. As a math teacher at the school, I began encouraging my students to borrow my Mancala, Jenga, and Battleship games at lunch. The results were tremendous: students clamouring to borrow my games and then sitting in their seats and challenging their teammates. Not only that, but they became proud of the problem-solving skills they were developing and began teaching their fellow students how to play. This small effort has calmed the cafeteria and given our students a chance to bend their brain in a new and different way. Lunchtime is a short break in an academically packed day for our students, who attend classes from 7:45AM to 5PM every day and one Saturday a month. Using this lunch to challenge teammates in a healthy way, learn games from other cultures, and grow as problem-solvers is exactly the message we want our students to internalize. Our cafeteria, with the addition of more available games, will truly take on the characteristics of a corner coffeeshop!
