I teach 7/8 grade ELA in a rural district. My students are interested in all things outdoors: hunting, fishing, camping, ranching, and rodeo are all common hobbies of my students.
While my students are active in the outdoors, they are hesitant readers in or out of the classroom.
The many disruptions due to the pandemic have negatively impacted my student's reading levels, and I find myself constantly trying to bridge the gaps in their reading comprehension.
My Project
I am excited to introduce book clubs to my middle grade readers. My students are struggling to return to novels after so much time spent on screens during distance learning, and I believe the best way to renew their love of reading is to offer exciting novels that will capture their interest. I have chosen a list of highly engaging fantasy novels that my students have been drawn to in the past.
I believe that a love of reading comes through discussing great literature and making connections to what we are reading.I believe that the best way to increase a student's love of reading is through exposure to several types of novels that support their curiosity and imagination.
