My students come from many different countries across the globe. They speak multiple languages and have some incredible life stories that I love to listen to as I learn about each of them. Their experiences are both incredible and harrowing, and yet we all come together in the same classroom to find comfort, education, a positive environment, and a unique learning experience.
What makes these students so special is that they come from around the world and all have something to teach each other- and they always have something to teach me.
Each year, I learn a great deal about my students and about the experiences they've had and the places they've been. In a world where new technology and traditional education is always at our fingertips, it's meaningful for me as a teacher to expose my students to special opportunities, unique trips, and a comfortable setting where learning is evident and expected, and all students will remain engaged so that we can try new things and always remain successful. I hope to engage disengaged students by giving them reasons to come to school and get excited about learning!
My Project
It's that time of year where we are out of tissues, gloves, snacks, water and need to restock on these needs as well as add some new and exciting books to our collection.
Having things like snacks, tissues, gloves, and brand new books keep our classroom more than just a classroom but a safe space.
These are things that become necessary with learning and encourage students to focus and do well while also being cared about and loved. Providing snacks allows my students to build energy and stamina to keep working, reading, and learning. I will be using the pretzels and water bottles to create emergency bags for one of our students who has Vasovagal and needs to have snacks and water on hand just in case she starts to feel dizzy. Doing this provides safety and love for this student and all students.
As an English teacher I also believe it's important to always have new books on the book shelf in order to get students excited about reading. By showing them new titles and authors on a wide variety of topics and situations shows that no matter what students are going through they can find a book or a character to connect or relate to. This is the beauty of reading that my students might not know yet but I want to help them figure out. I have the book series from Kobe Bryant and a few other books about him in this project to honor his life and allow my students to learn more about him after his death. Many of them loved him and will be excited to see these books.
