The seventh grade at the Haines School is part of the Chicago Math and Science Initiative. As part of that program we are teaching a student centered, researched based science program developed by University of California, Berkley. In this program students are asked to observe micro-organisms. We are not able to do this because we do not have microscopes powerful enough to see to them. I can talk and draw pictures of paramecium but the students can not see them. They cannot observe plant and animal cells. This is a real deficit for these students. We need 8 microscopes to enable these activities to be completed. There are 5 classes, with a total of 150 students, who will benefit from the microscopes and because the program is ongoing, more students will benefit each year. I am respectfully requesting 8 microscopes for the seventh grade at Haines School so we can successfully complete the microbiology section our science program.
