Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a small school with one teacher per grade, and there are 27 students in my class. My students are low income, from Spanish speaking homes, but are very motivated and well behaved. They devour knowledge and opportunities that they are given. Their enthusiasm is infectious. Everyone who meets them is charmed by them!
Even though most are below grade level in reading, they work very hard and have great attitudes.
I love being their teacher. It is such an honor to watch them grow.
My Project
Testing is coming up, and this year my students have to take a big standardized test on science. For this reason, we are going more in depth than usual on our science subjects.
Fifth grade studies matter, atoms, and chemical reactions.
So I would love to have enough microscopes for my class to use in small groups.
Also, they recently discovered Bill Nye and they love him! I selected a few of his videos for us to watch. (The only ones on Youtube are poor quality.) These are interactive DVDs, so we will also be able to play science review games with them.
I also would like more headphones, because when it comes time for testing, I have to be sure we have enough working headphones for all students. Other teachers tend to come running to me before the tests panicking and asking to borrow headphones as well! I want all students in our school to have the best chance on the test, so I'd like more than enough sets of earbuds in case I have to share.
We also need more markers for art and making math and science diagrams. I also am asking for the best pencil sharpener, as voted by my 5th grade teachers' group on Facebook!
We have an Aerogarden (a small hydroponic unit), but we need new seed pods for it. This allows us to grow fresh herbs in class and the kids love seeing the growth process and tracking it with pictures in their science notebooks. We need batteries for our moon lamp as well!
Also, a couple of books that I would like to read aloud to my class, including one on the taiga biome (the only biome our library doesn't have a book on) and Wonder, which I've heard great things about.
