Microscope Mitosis Madness

My students need 2 cordless microscopes to develop a better understanding of the microscopic world in Biology and Advanced Biology.

Biology at a poverty stricken school district, which is also labeled as a state priority in education. This year we are also having issues with funding for our education resources needed for student learning.

I teach Biology and Advanced Biology at a truly poverty stricken district. Over 50% of our students are on free and reduced lunch. Over 28.2% of our student’s families are living in homes classified as a “poverty level” by the US census. Our school district is also in a financial crunch. Based on our most recent state review, our district has also been classified as a priority school. The main reason for this is not meeting our AYP goals in core areas. We are currently implementing an accountability plan but with the current financial situation, we are unable to purchase additional resources like microscopes. My class sizes average 25 students. We only have three working microscopes in the entire building. In the past I have used these three microscopes and many of the students do not truly get the time to use the microscopes because of the very few I have.

My students are having trouble understanding cellular processes and mitosis/meiosis. This is why I am asking for two new microscopes to add to the other three microscopes that work. Manipulation of these microscopes would greatly impact the students learning by applying hands on experiences on a subject that is hard to grasp just by theoretically talking about cells. The microscopes will also allow my Biology and Advanced Biology students become more comfortable in a laboratory setting preparing them for the challenges ahead in college science. The ability to work a microscope is essential in the field of medicine. This training should begin before college. My Advanced Biology classes will be using the microscopes for creating stained slides for bacteria, observe and learn about what types of tissues plants and animals are composed of. The possibilities are endless for what lessons and knowledge building I could teach with three extra microscopes!

With your help my students will be able to explore a world that we have only been able to hypothetically discuss. Your donation will allow my students to explore the possibilities with microscopes while preparing them for a bright future in college and in any of the medical fields. Thank you for supporting my students in this future endeavor of microscopes.
