Microscope Mania

Help me give my students beautiful working microscopes. In my science and health classes we do microscopy and need microscopes that work consistently.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Teaching at a bilingual, K-8 grade school gives me a really unique experience with teaching an enormous diversity of students. Students from all over the world and from throughout our city converge here to blend their experiences into one community.

On a daily basis, I hear students speaking a multitude of languages, sharing their cultural backgrounds, and enjoying each other's company.

I am lucky enough to teach science to this community. Teaching an inquiry-based science class adds another level. Students are able to move throughout the classroom to explore, discuss, and question. The student-led classroom allows the students to push one another to a new level, challenging each other's thinking by asking higher-level questions.

My Project

My students use microscopes all of the time in class, however they are now in disrepair after years of use. No matter the care we take, there are always components that ware out due to basic usage.

Right now our microscopes are hanging on by a thread, sometimes illuminating, only focusing on one objective, or not working at all.

We would love to continue our study of all living things and their structures and functions by looking at them on a cellular level. Giving us the gift of these microscopes will help us do just that.
