Welcome to Biology! Today we will be studying how cells reproduce by visualizing mitosis under a microscope. Wait, we can't do this because we don't have a microscope capable of magnifying 100X. OR, we could look at blood cells…oh, we can't do that either! I am a 10th and 11th grade teacher in Oakland, California and I am writing to you in hopes of getting a microscope for my students. But let me introduce you to my school first. I work at a small school in Oakland, serving low income African-American and Latino students. This work is the most exciting, difficult and wonderful work one can have. I wish you could be present to see the amazing transformations that I have had the privilege to witness on a day-to-day basis. It is truly awe-inspiring. There are, however, some funding issues. One of the things that would benefit our classroom, and this includes both my teaching partner and myself, is a microscope that is capable of 100X magnification. We teach both Biology and Physiology and are limited in what we can actually show the students on a cellular level. We are asking for a Binocular Compound Microscope. We will pay for the video that can be attached so that all of our students can be introduced to that unique and oh-so-cool microscopic world. But we need your help to do so. All of our students would benefit from this experience. Your generosity would touch more than 300 students' lives, perhaps opening doors for them that they have never considered. Personally, I was hooked on biology when I was able to see critters on a microscopic level. I want my students to feel that passion. With your help, we can do it! Thank you for your interest!
