Help me give my students supplies necessary such as trays, soil, and seeds to start up a school micro green garden! My students want to continue their work growing micro greens to provide fresh vegetables to our school!

My Project

My amazing students have been learning about the benefits of micro greens and came up with this project themselves to be continued on by our environmental science class after mini term. Below is a message from them about their project that I think shows what amazing leaders they are in our community!

"Throughout our mini term, we have spent our time learning about and growing micro greens.

The advantage to growing micro greens rather than full-fledged vegetables is that all the nutrients from that vegetable are inside of that tiny shoot.

We have enjoyed learning and growing micro greens, but sadly, mini term will end soon. We would like to continue growing micro greens and make them accessible to our fellow students at SAMi!

Every day, kids at my school have little to no access to fresh nutritious food. How is it fair that there are some kids who get fresh healthy foods from home, while others are left with nothing? Food deserts are a prominent issue that we overlook, especially in my community. East Tacoma is a food desert with 33% of the population being families with children (many of which go to SAMi). People living there have a predicted life expectancy of 7 years less than other areas in my city.

We need quality equipment to sustain a growing operation that would provide students with an opportunity to have fresh, school-grown, healthy salad greens to counter the less-than-healthy school lunches that are currently served. Because we don’t have an official cafeteria, we have no salad bar, which means our fruit and vegetable options are week-old, pre-packaged carrots and fruit cups. If we meet our goal, hundreds of students would have access to healthy salad greens!"

My students are amazing and I think this project will bring a lot of learning, community growth, and joy to SAMi!
