Help me give my students Micro:bits, handheld, programmable micro-computers that can be programmed to make cool creations, from robots to musical instruments
I teach Technology Applications and Computer Science to middle school students. It is amazing to see how much the students change from the beginning of 6th grade to the end of 8th grade. At my school, we encourage students to make good choices and strive for kindness by setting a good example, treating them with respect, and setting high expectations for behavior, attitude, and studiousness. My students are growing and changing rapidly and are full of such energy and life that it can be infectious (in a good way).
We are a Title I school with low income families who strive to provide the best for their children.
Our rural location and lack of local business offers us few economic advantages in the classroom. We believe that our students deserve the very best we can offer, and I will strive to do what I can to provide for my students. Each student has something to offer this world, and with your help we can achieve the very best.
My Project
Micro:bits are a great way to help my students get hands on with the codes they create on the computer. They can get experience programming sensors, buttons, and LED that will give them physical results. Micro:bits have 25 individually-programmable LEDs, programmable buttons, physical connection pins, light and temperature sensors, motion sensors (accelerometer and compass), wireless communication (via radio and Bluetooth), and a USB interface.
Micro:bits will give my students the opportunity to demonstrate the computer science concepts they have learned in a variety of activities and experiments.
Micro:bits can be programmed in several different programming languages. This will help ease the transition from block-based coding to text based coding.
