My students need comfortable headphones and durable computer mice as they move from using the school's computer lab to using laptop carts for testing, and for using the laptops for publishing and other activities.
Our class consists of two dozen uniquely energetic, creative, motivated seven- and eight-year-old students, heading full STEAM ahead into Second Grade. Ours is a neighborhood school, serving the families of our city since 1953. Our class and school has an amazing group of children from a fabulously diverse range of backgrounds and experiences. Unfortunately, high poverty is part of the experience for most of these young learners.
These wonderfully wiggly young learners deserve every advantage as we work together to improve achievement in reading, math, and science by focusing on the whole child - building confidence while fostering their creativity and curiosity.
Lifelong learners are created by lighting the spark of imagination that drives a passion to learn.
I teach my students through rich, integrated units that make connections between literature, science, math, social studies, and the arts. Every unit begins with all of us together at the carpet, with a rich piece of children's literature.
Thank you for taking the time to read about how we can work together to provide for tools for imaginative creation, collaboration, and authentic learning experiences in our classroom!
My Project
My students really need for our class to have a dedicated set of headphones and computer mice that are ready to go when it is our turn to use the laptops for monthly "growth monitoring" tests, and for our required major testing a few times a year!
Fumbling with tangled wires or broken jacks when we're getting ready to do our best and show what we know can be so darn frustrating!
I have had to go to multiple classrooms at times to round up enough headphones and/or mice for all of us to get on a laptop at the same time for our monthly Growth Monitoring tests, which are a quick "check up" in math and reading to make sure students are making progress and to identify the areas where we need to focus.
We will also be using these laptops more and more for publishing and for STEAM and STEM projects, such as coding, creating SWAYs, etc. We will also be able to use these headphones while working on reading and math tasks, for example, while the students listen to stories on RAZ-Kids. I have such a terrific group of kids, and they deserve every advantage as we move through second grade - their final year to help identify and close those opportunity gaps before they begin standardized state testing next year.
