Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a group of twenty-four first grade students in one of the cities with the highest crime in the nation. All students at my school site receive a free lunch. A full 97% of my school's student population is Hispanic, and most of them are first-generation in the United States. At least 15% of my students are newcomers to the country. School is one of the only places in which my students interact with someone who speaks academic English.
Living and attending school in a highly impoverished urban setting, my students are not exposed to many educational experiences outside of the classroom.
Exposing my students to different types of learning while keeping them engaged and entertained is very important to me.
My Project
Every school year we have a presentation in which we dance to a traditional Mexican Folkloric song. We practice a lot so that we have a beautiful performance. We have the outfits for the students but not the shoes. Many times parents are unable to buy them the shoes necessary for the performance. Most students end up wearing their own wornout shoes, usually sneakers. This year, I am asking for your support so that all of my students can have their own shoes for the performance and then they get to keep them to use as their own. My students really need this.
The shoes that they wear now are worn-out and surely not so confortable anymore.
I´ve asked for a size larger than what they currently wear to make sure that the shoes fit them well when they begin to use them at the end of the school year.
