Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As an eighth grade Science teacher in an urban setting, where more than 85% of the student body is at or below the poverty level, I am desperately trying to prepare my students for the high school lab experience. Because I see more than 120 students a day, I can assure you that the benefits of funding this proposal will be far reaching indeed, not only for this year, but for many years to come. Part of my physical science curriculum requires that the students are able to determine the mass of a myriad of things and it is very difficult because I only have two triple beam balances. I need to give them direct experience with utilizing scientific equipment and so I am appealing to someone to donate four triple beam balances. Because of my "hands-on" science belief, I am seriously curtailed from doing many things because the balances are such an integral part of the activities. My philosophy of pedagogy, after twenty-plus years of science teaching, is aligned with the saying, "I do and I remember". I truly believe when students are able to manipulate objects and formulate solid inquiry skills, they maintain their knowledge base far better than students who "read the book and answer the questions" Kids who take part in their learning become more confident in themselves,and consequently better prepared to face life's challenges. I want to give these children every possible advantage I can. Thank you.
