Metric Equipment

My students need hands on experience with scientific tools. They need 24 graduated cylinders of various sizes, 6 stopwatches, and a roller coaster physics DVD.

My Students

My students are freshmen in high school with little or no experience in lab sciences. My physics class provides them with an opportunity to take real measurements in real time from the very first day.

The majority of my students come from single parent, economically disadvantaged homes.

They need not only to learn about science, but to have experience with "workplace readiness" exposure to taking measurements and using rulers, stop watches and other lab equipment which will reinforce their knowledge of both math and science.

My Project

The concept of "volume" is basically unknown to my students. By introducing them to the metric system and its logical system of measuring mass, volume, length and time, I am preparing them for a life time of science study which will be used in future classes.

The overlap of physics and math is obvious, however, by taking measurements of various items, students will be learning math through a hands on experience.

The metric system is based on the number 10. As we become more global in our outlook, students must learn to work in a world that accepts both British and Metric measurements.
