Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are inspirational, passionate, responsible, and hard-working. Many of the music students who are in middle school attend their music elective during zero period. This period begins before the regular school day, so students elect to attend seven periods a day in lieu of the traditional six periods. This class is voluntary and year after year our enrollment for zero period increases as students are motivated to continue their music education. Many of our students have been enrolled in the instrumental music program since the third grade. They elect not only to stay at our school through middle school but they also continue to participate in the instrumental music program.
Many of our students come from low income families, are foster youth students, or share a household with extended family in order to remain in the district.
While staying enrolled in the district, families are able to keep their children at our school from elementary through middle school. Due to continuous enrollment, older siblings inspire their brothers, sisters and/or cousins to participate in music. Our school provides these opportunities for students to ensure exposure to the fine arts.
My Project
With new method books our goal is to improve upon our note and rhythm reading. Our new books will also help us to continue to build upon our tone/balance and intonation; which will help enhance our ability to perform as an ensemble and individual musicianship. With these method books my students will learn new exercises to build on their beginning skills from the 5th and 6th grade. These new books will introduce new scales, arpeggio exercises and chromatic scales along with lip slurs for brass players and long tone exercises for wind players. My percussion students will be given a variety of rhythms to learn and read as well as new sticking patterns and rolls.
Every section of beginning, intermediate and advanced band will benefit from a new method book.
As an ensemble each group will continue to improve upon their sound and intonation and technical proficiency. All of these are essential for improving upon previously acquired techniques.
