Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This is my first year being a full-time special education teacher when seeking advice from other teachers a large number of people told me to try switching to general education. I did not do such a thing I was not afraid of doing something different because most times emotionally disturbed children are just misunderstood and I am leaving that up to me to figure them out and make them finally feel safe in their own environment. I want my students to know that no matter what happens one day I will never judge or hold that against them the following day, I want to show these kids that there are people who care a lot about them.
Help us be ourselves!
My kids suffer from ADHD and are emotionally disturbed and receive medication I would like from them to have a relaxation corner where they can take a break from the outside when they feel like they may go into crisis.
My kids are so kind and the way they defend each other when someone is trying to bully them is so beautiful to me. They love each other which makes me love them even more already.
My Project
I teach a 12:1:5 which means I have twelve students one teacher and five paraprofessionals. My students are what they say "emotionally disturbed" but to me, they just learn in a different way and it takes a teacher who will actually care about the different ways my students may learn. My students suffer from ADHD, ODD, Bipolar disorder and more and at times of the day because of there medication these sensory toys will help them relax and come back to reality. I teach a class of twelve first graders who do receive medication and may need a place to rest their heads instead of that hard desk. I cannot afford to give my students the sensory corner they need but I know it would be a great help for them and their education. This sensory station will give my students the opportunity to relax in a way that will keep them safe. My students will use these sensory items to relax and take a break from getting overwhelmed with work and being asked to sit to finish their number. The materials asked will help my students before they go into crisis. For instance, research shows kinetic sand will are students with emotional disturbance regroup and focus on work. Also, the carpet will be a great incentive for my classroom so that the students will be able to take a nap when their medication seems to make them extremely fatigued.
