Help me give my students the supplies to work on three individual multi-sensory projects. Canvas, paint, and glue all for paint pouring, Linoleum blocks for bold patterned designs, and foil for carving.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are from the New Haven inner city. They have very little opportunity to make high quality art because of a lack of funding within the school district. Many of the students are highly disengaged because of these factors. They are frequently absent, asleep in class, or demonstrating bad behavior.
They have more social/emotional trauma then your average teenager and need the arts as an outlet to release and compose their thoughts and feelings.
They have amazing ideas, and I want to see them come to life! These materials will show them that they can be given beautiful things to create with but that respecting and appreciating those things is of the utmost importance.
My Project
In order to help my students become more engaged I am proposing that if I present them with more interesting projects, we can reign them in. These projects are beyond your typical art projects. They engage the students in a way that many of them have never experienced. When you introduce new ideas to disengaged kids they are given the opportunity to get involved. The students are often distracted, sleeping, or frequently absent. When they see Paint Pouring for the first time, I believe they will be inspired!
The project is mesmerizing, and I believe that using a little bit of shock and awe can really get the students to participate, and further more to excite them as to whats possible when it comes to art.
Projects of this intensity and cost rarely get to come to life in this school because of the lack of funds.
Linoleum block printing, and foil carving allow the students to see the world beyond 2-d. This is very important to their growth but again the supplies are costly. I truly believe by giving these disengaged students the same upgraded supplies and projects you can show them that they matter and that art is not just about drawing on copy paper.
