Help me give my students magnetic letters allowing them to practice learning their alphabet, spelling their names, and play games such as what letter is missing.
Kindergarten students are being asked to do more and learn more every year. Kindergarten is no longer a place where students are just learning social skills and school skills, but they are being asked to read, write, add, subtract, understand basic sentence structures, and more. As a prior kindergarten teacher for three years, I can see the importance of setting up the students to be successful.
As a teacher in a program for low-income families, I provide high-risk students with a safe, loving, and caring environment where they can begin to feel secure and begin to open up for various learning opportunities in our free preschool.
In the classroom, we are building skills through play and whole group lessons which will benefit the students for a lifetime of learning. While this may sound easy, there is a diverse culture in my classroom that provides many challenges. Many students have an IEP, come from trauma situations, or do not speak English as their primary language. My goal is to set up three and four-year-old students with the skills necessary to be successful in Kindergarten.
My Project
When children first start to play around with letters, they like to ask an adult what word they made. Sometimes it is a simple word such as "cat" while other times it might be a silly word such as "tusekqmea." They always smile when you try to sound out their word, and it doesn't sound right to them. In order to do that, they have to first learn their letters and sounds.
My fantastic parents cannot afford to purchase hands-on letters and are instead forced to use paper or Post-it notes.
My students come from low to no income families. I provided the students with some games and activities, but they do not have magnetic letters or numbers to play. I have recommended them to use paper or Post-it notes or other letters they may find. How amazed would their faces be if I could provide them with these letters and numbers they can continuously use even through kindergarten and first grade. These will last longer than paper, and the children can move them around on the fridge while they learn.
