Help me give my students humorous, high interest books to read so they may enhance their fluency with a variety of authors using familiar text and animals that they want to read about and love.
My funny, witty and adventurous students want to READ books that they can relate to and find humorous! They are curious, full of excitement, and eager to read books with exciting animal characters, plots and facts. My children come to me from a variety of family situations and have many different learning styles.
Reading should not be presented to children as a chore, a duty; It should be offered as a gift.(Kate DiCamillo)
I teach second grade in a Title I school. We reside in a small rural town in which students receive free breakfast and lunch. Even though they are only in second grade and face many challenges, I believe these children should be given the opportunity to have a variety of literature to read that appeals to their curiosity and whimsical nature.
My Project
Last year I had a student bring in a Mercy Watson book by Kate DiCamillo and asked if I would read it to the class. It was a huge hit! The kids were so engaged and everyone made a connection with this book. It was a fabulous learning experience for all. Some of my students, at that time, had never been introduced to any chapter books. Well, needless to say, I borrowed that same book this year, (from the same student last year who brought it in). She wanted me to share it with my class this year.
What a kind and generous act of kindness from a former student!
I wish to give my students the joy of reading humorous animal literature this year as well. I will use these book for interactive read aloud, as well as, independent reading and take home books for parents.
