Menu to Reading: Vocabulary Appetizer, Comprehension Entree
My students need a listening center and books to enhance their reading skills during the time when I am working with small groups and individual students.
In this age of budget cuts our school is requesting that we forgo using the workbooks for language arts and math. I am excited about teaching without the workbooks and am searching for ways to meet the needs of my students through differentiated instruction. Technology is more important than ever.
Our school is in a rural area where most parents work in jobs that pay minimal salaries.
Students come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Some have never even been to the mall or out of the county. Vocabulary is somewhat limited while other students have many language experiences. Like many children these days, they do not listen well in a large group situation. Therefore they need to be taught individually or in a small group situation. This year I have 25 second graders one of whom has autism, three that are gifted, six that are very limited in the skills necessary to be successful, and a few that are at-risk. On the second grade level they are still very eager to learn and to please adults. They crave my attention. I want to meet the needs of every one of them.
My Project
With a very diverse group of learners, I am trying to meet the needs of each and every one of them. With the listening center I am requesting, I will be able to put a small group of students at the center to learning vocabulary and comprehension for their reading skills. The title of my project shows that the "menu" to reading includes comprehension and vocabulary. It is very important to keep all students busy improving their reading daily and that is my intention. This project will help me to achieve that goal.
If teachers are to be the instrument for "no child left behind" Then donors supporting the teachers will be the ones to provide foundation for building a successful future for our children.
