My students come from a range of backgrounds and are academically at very different places. My fifth grade class consists of gifted students, ESOL students, and special education students. I teach at an International Baccalaureate school where we promote international mindedness. We want our students to be caring, respectful, and open minded. We want our students to guide their own learning by asking questions and researching to find the answers to those questions. Our students learn to reflect on their work and learning. We also want to encourage our students to use technology.
My Project
These books will expose students to a variety of nonfiction texts. These will serve as mentor texts when creating informative writings. The professional books will help me grow as a reading teacher.
Using mentor texts like the ones from National Geographic will inspire my students to read more informational texts.
Hopefully these books will encourage my students to read more, research more, and be in charge of their own learning.
These texts will also provide my students with quality examples to improve their writing skills. Students will learn how to incorporate nonfiction text features and how to narrow down a topic. These texts can help inspire students in reading and writing.
