Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
First grade is such an amazing grade because there is hard evidence of tremendous growth by the end of the year academically and socially. First graders are so impressionable and it is important to me to provide opportunities and experiences that will prepare them for the future. The school that I teach at is a Title 1 school so it is critical for me to provide as much support as I can in my classroom.
First graders have such a positive attitude and are so much fun!!
They say the funniest things and their curiosity inspires me daily.
My Project
Mentor texts are crucial when teaching students a certain genre of writing. In first grade students are expected to write narratives, all abouts (nonfiction), and opinion pieces. Mentor books help students see various writing styles of different authors. By seeing this, students get the notion that there is not just one way but many ways to tell their story. Writing can be intimidating for some students, especially my English Language Learners. However, when they hear and enjoy a book that I have read to them during story time and I refer back to the story during writing time, the learning tends to stick more.
Some of the mentor texts I am requesting include Knuffle Bunny, The Best Story, and Ralph Tells a Story.
