Fifth grade is an exciting time! My fifth grade students are growing up in busy city life. A majority of these students are first or second generation Americans and many are English language learners. As they experience their final year of elementary school, they are ready to explore and try new things!
They are eager to learn and thoroughly enjoy being immersed in hands-on activities.
With that being said, as their teacher, I want to give them the best educational opportunities I can, and that includes providing them with the materials they to succeed. As I learn more about my students, I learn more about their needs and what suits them best.
My Project
My students LOVE to read! I've discovered they also love to have books read to them. When listening to various books they have an opportunity to hear the teacher model different reading strategies. These books will provide opportunities to hear how readers read, think, ask questions, predict, reflect, and respond to the text. In addition, they will have the chance to discuss, read, and practice the various strategies that were modeled.
Hearing entertaining stories read to them will motivate them to connect and relate with the characters and events that occur and allow them to implement strategies in their own reading and writing.
My students and I look forward to this read aloud time and we cannot wait to have new and engaging books to use in our reading and writing!
