As the school's literacy coach, I support teachers and students in moving their reading and writing to new heights. The joyful sound of kids reading and discussing their books can be heard throughout the school during Readers' Workshop. At Writers' Workshop students craft their work thoughtfully.
Our school has the most amazing students.
They come from many different cultures, speak many different languages and though they live with great poverty and trauma, they enter our school each day with hopefulness and a desire to do well. They deserve so much better and we strive to provide them with opportunities to reach for their dreams.
My Project
These mentor texts will be used by teachers for interactive read aloud during reading time to immerse the students in the genre they are studying. Students will stop and talk about these texts. Later, they will return to these texts in writing, to study them closely, notice the author craft moves and integrate those moves in their own writing. They will be available as students do their hard work of writing, returning to them again and again for guidance and support.
Our students are smart, hardworking students.
They want to and can learn. Sometimes the difference can come from a great book that captures their attention, is at their reading level and shows them the way. These books will provide much needed support to our developing readers and writers.
