My students need these mentor texts such as My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother, Owl Moon, What You Know First, Fireflies and more so they can have examples of quality writing to draw from when they go to write on their own.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students want to be writers, but need a little help getting started. As I start each lesson in Writer's Workshop, I will use these mentor texts to expose my students to quality writing. The more exposure they have to quality textsm the easier it will be for them to compose on their own.
My students attend their neighborhood school and there are approximately 700/800 students enrolled.
We have two-way Bi-lingual classes, one-way Bi-lingual classes and General Ed classes. The parents are first generation residents and they are sending their children to our school so they can get a quality education. Our school just got a make-over, courtesy of businesses in the area and we just had our "Big Dig" Saturday with Real School Gardens. The kids are fired up...it's really given them a sense of pride in their school, as well as their parents.
My Project
These books will be used to spark my students' interest in writing. If writing doesn't come naturally to you, you sometimes need a starting point and something to get the ideas flowing. Writing is an important skill necessary in every day life, so perhaps I can plant a seed and one day, I'll have a student that becomes an author.
Many of our students are learning English as a second language.
They are having to learn to speak it, read it and write it. These mentor texts will provide the examples they need to get started writing and expose them to experiences they haven't had.
