My students need these high motivating books to supplement our language curriculum. Students will also be able to read these stories during our Reading Workshop.
I have a classroom of 20 awesome students. My students come from a small, rural-based community. Our school is a K-2 building where 60% of the students are on free and reduced meals.
My students love to have me read to them and are always engaged during read-alouds.
They rush to the reading carpet and can't wait to see what book I will introduce next.
My students have a wide variety of interests but science seems to be one of the areas that my students look forward to every day. They love to do experiments and do hands-on activities with science.
My Project
These books will give students an opportunity to see how authors actually use language to create exciting books that readers enjoy reading. These books will be used during our read-alouds to introduce different literary techniques.
Each book that I have requested has a mentor sentence that provides a springboard to help teach our language curriculum using real literature.
Students listen to the read-aloud and try to identify the mentor sentence. After listening to the whole story, students then try to identify things that they notice about the mentor sentence like proper nouns, capitalization at the beginning of a sentence, verbs, adjectives, pronouns, etc. Students also edit and revise the sentence to practice writing conventions.
Having each of these books in my classroom also allows my students to pick up these engaging stories and read them during our Reading workshop time.
