Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are funny, loving, creative, inspirational. inquisitive, and poor. They are bilingual 7- and 8-year-olds who come from diverse backgrounds and may have had interrupted schooling. They live in impoverished areas where funding is always being cut. They aren't different from many other kids; they just need a little help to read.
Getting these books will supply my library with books so that my students are genuinely engaged as we look at the use of the English language and how these great authors use it.
These books will serve as models for them and help them see how authentic authors engage readers and writers alike. My students want and need to be great authors. Why not start them off in second grade?
My Project
This project will help our English Language Learners see how authors use language to create out-of-this-world sentences. They will use these books as their models so that they can write their own.
My students will be so excited to see that they can write like the authors of their favorite books.
For example, they can read Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathmann and use sentences like Peggy's so that they can write just like her when they write their own stories, opening up the world to them.
My diverse students need to be exposed to authentic writing, and, with these books, they will want to read and write. These books are exciting and fascinating to them. What a great way to keep them engaged! Not only will they see what great writing looks like, they can also practice writing their own. We will dive into writing sentences that will hook readers and surprise all their friends and families.
