Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day at school begins with greeting my students, collecting homework, and honoring points reflecting their attendance, water bottles, and wearing uniform on each table.
My students are thirty-one children who are always smiling, talking, and asking questions from the first ringing of the bell each day.
They belong to different ethnic backgrounds, and I learn from each of them every single day at school. They attend an urban school where families qualify for Title I to receive free lunch at the cafeteria. We have worked diligently to close math-learning gaps, but we need to practice even more to achieve our goal. I am asking for your help to make this dream become true.
My Project
It is a fact that basic operations are essential to learning in math. According to the curriculum, I should be teaching fractions and decimals in 5th Grade, but I know that more than forty percent of my students need help in multiplication and division in order to master these new standards.
By having a hands-on multiplication and division kit, I can help my students visualize the answers when using hundred flats, tens rods, and ones cubes.
I also believe that “The Visualize It! Part-Whole “ cards for multiplication, division, and fractions will create some fluency in Math that is so essential for our mental math skills. I can plan lessons to use these materials for either small groups math centers and for independent practice.
A math chart and place value cards will equally help my students while modeling lessons in class. They are color code and this is essential for students feel engaged while paying attention during Math sessions. It is a fact that posters and value cards can be used at anytime and will last for years.
Finally, I need to think about my students that are at grade level, too. The Student Spot Error Cards will enhance these students to think twice. These leveled students need to find the error, fix the answers, and most importantly explain how they solve the problem. Critical thinking, rational thinking, and writing skills are all combined at the same time while working on the problem.
Math is as important as any other subject taught at school, but it has the advantage of helping students learn to think "outside the box." Be our generous person who will help me close those learning math gaps to make sure my students are ready for Middle School.
