I work in a trauma sensitive special education school designed for students whose needs are exceptional. They come to us from all different parts of the county with diverse behavioral needs. As a class, we work on coping and social skills daily to help each student design plans that work best for them. We love and care for each student in the classroom but, ultimately, aim to assist them in returning to their home school with the skills they need to learn and socialize.
We work to build a community that encourages growth and accepts the small victories that are unique to each student.
This is our school motto: Be safe, be kind, and never give up. We teach the ideas of the motto through academics, but it is truly experienced in the small unplanned moments the students encounter daily. The individualized attention each student receives is vital to the mental and emotional health that we aim to process and strengthen with them whenever the opportunity presents itself.
My Project
Just like every student learns academics differently, every student processes internal and external stimuli differently. In our classroom, we aim to give students the tools and skills they need to be successful in everyday life. This is taught by providing mental and emotional coping skills so that each individual can begin to monitor their own behaviors.
Students naturally gravitate towards the tools they need, so it is important to have the variety of options available.
Some learners can hear social and emotional stories and relate to them. The books chosen to meet the needs of these students will be used as an introduction for problem solving, empathy building, and emotional recognition. Others need hands-on experience, like that provided by the cooperative games, to understand real life instances that require coping skills. Race to Treasure, Stone Soup, and Outfoxed are a few of the games that require student teamwork to meet an outcome and win. Many need to dive right in with toys and sensory activities to process through a variety of emotions. The sensory table will be used with the kinetic sand, gel beads, and more for small group sensory exploration while the putty, Wikkistix, and sensory toys will be used for a students individual exploration time.
We hope to provide an inclusive classroom with options that can meet the needs of all students while being practical enough to take into their everyday lives.
