Nonprofit Ventures is a unique class where students learn the fundamentals of running an actual 501(c)3 nonprofit business that benefits children in their community. By running an actual chapter of Project Linus, a nonprofit that makes new, handmade blankets to comfort children who are critically ill, traumatized or otherwise in need in our community, students are learning, in real time, and with real application, that every task they do is not for a grade, but their actions have meaning and value to a child who is struggling with severe trauma.
Our chapter has two large community events a year run entirely by students where they encourage over 400 people to join their efforts in bringing in over 1,000 blankets twice a year to help comfort kids in need!
Often we hear that the home economic arts are being lost, yet students are eager to learn these skills, but lack the supplies to be able to do so. We need help to bring more skills to students!
My Project
Many of my students join Nonprofit Ventures - Project Linus because they are compelled to make a positive impact in the life of a child struggling with a life-threatening illness or trauma by making them a handmade, new blanket to comfort them in their time of need. Students are eager to learn how to sew a quilt or crochet an entire blanket by hand. Many of our students were also impacted by the shooting at Saugus High School in our district where our Project Linus Chapter covered EVERY student with one of our handmade blankets.
Our program has grown so large that we were given a larger space, but we do not have enough machines for all of our students to sew their projects as needed.
Additionally, we are also faced with COVID restrictions, and while students are willing to learn via videos and Zoom, they do not all have machines at home to learn on. We are asking for help in acquiring new machines that do not need repair or cleaning. We will use these every semester for all four levels of the class.
