My students are faced with adversity daily. Some struggle with having their essential needs met such as a roof over their heads, food on the table, water or electricity to take care of their basic hygiene needs.
These students come to school and greet me with a smile even though the odds are stacked against them.
The school is located in a suburb of Tulsa. The school is a Title l school.
Despite their struggles, my students strive to do their best each day. They are eager to learn and challenge themselves to go above and beyond what is expected.
The class set of the One and Only Ivan will help set the classroom climate and culture of kindness and problem solving as they explore Ivan's dilemma. It will also help students understand and apply figurative language to their own reading and writing. This novel's use is unlimited as a tool to teach reading skills. One aspect that I am particularly excited about is the social emotional skills that can be targeted throughout the book. So many of our students need to improve their coping skills, problem solving skills and how to handle being lonely, and making friends. I will be able to use the novel as a reference for these very skills.
