Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I'm a tenth grade literacy teacher at a school that serves a high-need population of students. I have a classroom library to encourage students to become readers, and a significant part of our class time is devoted to developing reading skills and a love of reading, so that students can be ready for college in three more years. Most of my students come to the 10th grade reading at least two grade levels below where they should be. Many of my students are struggling readers and are not likely to go to the public library on their own to find a book. It's difficult to get them to read without very current, very appealing books in the library. This year, we are going to start with a unit on reading and writing memoir. I will ask students to choose memoirs for independent reading while we study short memoir pieces that I choose and as they write about their own lives. For this proposal, I am requesting a variety of engaging memoir titles to add to our classroom library. I'm always looking for books written by authors of color, so that my African American and Hispanic students might see something of themselves and their own background in the authors I make available to them. I know these books can change the entire tone of our class and get the year off to a great start. I expect all of my students to meet or exceed the NYC standard of reading 24 books per school year.
