As a new teacher in a city-school district, I have been faced with many challenges--college equipped me with content, but not at all for the diversity and culture of the school I am working in. In this particular district, we see a significant amount of the challenges that our students face on a daily basis and I would do anything to bring a light into their young, spirited lives.
Funny, imaginative, and eager are just a few adjectives I can think of to describe the personalities of my students.
They deserve nothing but the best experiences in their 30+ hours at school every week. My students WANT to learn (even when it is about something totally unrelated to music, like my bird collection). They WANT to play and engage in music, but my classroom does not have the materials that this demographic needs to thrive and succeed! Music has found a way to change my life--I sincerely want for my students to have the opportunity to experience that sensation for themselves. I am very eager to show them the power and influence that music can have on them, for the better!
My Project
Some of the items I have chosen for this project revolve around my instrumental band students. My district has not provided me with matching method books for the students, so they are learning different things at different times and it increases the work-load on my end, significantly.
Band is a great way for students to express themselves and step away from everyday activities.
My goal is to engage and motivate students to incorporate music into their lives more readily! To do so, I have also included a guitar/mandolin set. These are instruments my students are very interested in and will help motivate them to participate more actively in the classroom.
