My students come from very diverse backgrounds and are extremely hardworking. I am amazed by the hard work that they put in on a daily basis.
Despite the many challenges they may face, my students are eager to learn new things, ask questions, and conduct experiments.
We are located in the San Antonio District, east of Lake Merritt, and our demographics reflect those of our neighborhood with approximately 35% Latino, 44% Asian, and 18% African American students. Many of our students have immigrated to the United States, and many more will be the first in their family to attend college. Approximately 40% of our students are English Language Learners, and over 94% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch programs.
My Project
I am hoping to upgrade my classroom space to better meet the needs and learning styles of my students. Many students often help take care of their siblings at home and are sometimes in a rush to make it to school on time. Our school has classes that are approximately 80 minutes long and my students often get antsy and restless during class. According to best trauma informed practices, students excel in a classroom that is well organized, allows for flexibility as well as student choice.
The products that I have selected will help my future scientists by giving them flexible seating options that could help them feel more comfortable and able to learn and succeed in science class.
The wobble stools and wobble chair cushions will provide students with opportunities to choose what work station may work best for them. The headphones will allow me to differentiate learning by allowing students to utilize the text to speech feature or watch videos to help emphasize the curriculum. I am excited to see how these items will transform our class and allow my students to excel especially during their 80 minute classes.
