Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a large public school in Oakland with a diverse population of students that speak a plethora of different languages at home and come from dozens of different backgrounds and experiences. My school is a Title I school where all students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many students enter school reading below grade level and do not have books at home.
Despite the challenges that many of my students face both in and out of school, they are remarkably resilient and inspire me every day.
My Project
Every day, our class does silent, independent reading. This is very challenging for my students who are reading multiple years below grade level or who are new to the country and just learning English. They need more interactive ways to learn and practice reading. Headphones will help these students focus on using online literacy programs while minimizing disruption to the students who are reading silently and independently. I also have some students who frequently have "the wiggles" and have a hard time focusing during whole-class instruction. These flexible seating cushions will allow my students who need to move a bit while listening to do so and not miss out on any learning.
My students have a variety of needs and these headphones and flexible seating cushions will help them focus on their learning during independent reading and whole-group and small-group instruction.
Every day, I see them bursting with a desire to learn and participate-- but their various needs are holding them back from accessing all the material they could be accessing. These headphones and cushions will help them so much!
