Mrs. Pflederer from Oak Lawn IL is requesting Flexible Seating through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

Meeting Student Needs Through Flexible Seating

Help me give my students some amazing flexible seats to meet their learning needs! I'd love to finish out my flexible seating collection with the Flex-Space Premium Wobble Chair and Flex-Space Balance Ball Seat.

My Students

Oh my goodness- this group of students (“5P” as we’ve come to call ourselves) really is such a treasure! These 5th graders are currently all located in the southwest Chicago suburb of Oak Lawn, but their families are from all over the world- Palestine, Mexico, Ireland, Jordan, Poland- and the list goes on! We love learning about each of their cultures as well as other cultures from all around the world during our Where in the World Wednesday morning meetings. One of my favorite things about this group of students is their intense love of being read to. One day I tried to stop our thrilling dystopia read-aloud and it was met with so much resistance and protests of, “nooo!!!! You can’t stop there, Mrs. P!” that we spent over an hour reading together in my library until we had finished the book. We had to do a special auction to decide who would get to check out the book’s sequel, as it was in such high demand. This group is also extremely creative, hardworking, and funny. We’ve worked hard to foster a sense of deep community and belonging in our classroom!

My Project

The two products I have chosen for this project will be used to help complete a flexible seating collection that has been months in the making. Currently, when you walk into my classroom, you may see students on swivel chairs or pillows, yoga mats or stools, sitting (or standing or laying) wherever they learn best. Students may be sorting vocabulary words into rows and writing stories with them, reading a book in the classroom library, or practicing math facts on their Chromebooks.

With the addition of a few more flexible seating options, I can ensure that all of my students have the opportunity to choose a seat that is comfortable, accommodates their needs, and engages them in independent and group tasks.

With your help, I can engage and reach students through flexible seating, which is both comfortable and inviting, a relaxing space and a focused space. As I've told my students- I like to be comfortable when I work- on a soft chair or even a couch! I'd like to offer them the same freedom to work in a space that keeps them focused but also keeps them comfortable. Not every student learns in the same way or even thrives in the exact same space, and I'd like to accommodate their various needs by creating this differentiated, "flexible" seating space. Thank you for helping this vision come to life! We couldn't do it without you!
