This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Many students with disabilities struggle to sit and listen to what the teacher is talking about. My students struggle staying in a chair or sitting on a carpet for more than a few minutes at a time. Not being able to sit makes it more difficult to teach the students the curriculum information they need to be getting. They are often fidgeting in their chairs, rolling around the carpet, or running around the room during designated learning circle times.

All of these items are created to meet a different sensory need, whether it is the headphones helping to cancel out noise input, the tube or marble run to watch items fall, the cube chair or weighted stuffed animal to feel secure while sitting, the magnet board to sort and organize, the balance beam or stilts to receive input to their feet, or the water doodle mat to satisfy the sensory desire for water or coloring in a mess-free manner.

If their sensory needs are met, then they can continue to improve in both their curriculum goals and many of their behavioral goals. Meeting their sensory needs continuously throughout the day will help my students to remain seated and attend to the task at hand. This is a school wide expectation they will encounter for the rest of their academic careers. It is imporant that they learn how to meet their sensory needs to accomplish this skill now so that they can be set on the path to success for years to come. Please help me provide my students with these materials that they so desperately need to succeed.
