Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Like all students, my students had a rough year last year and I'm surprised and amazed at their ability to come back into the classroom and keep trying every day. I'm not sure how I would have handled it if I had been a student during a pandemic. I have been so happy to see the small kindnesses that my students have displayed and it warms my heart to see how excited they are to be back in school.
We do have some challenges coming back to in person learning.
Many of my students have forgotten (or haven't had enough experience in) how to be part of a classroom community. I have had to get creative with my classroom management. There is also severe learning loss among my students. It's not just that they didn't make many gains last year, but also that, without practice, they've lost skills that they may have had before. I am seeking to help them regain those skills and create an enriching classroom environment.
My Project
I'm a fourth grade teacher, but many of my students are reading at a kindergarten, first grade, and second grade reading level right now. I mainly have third, fourth, and fifth grade books in my classroom and I need help stocking my library so that they can have the books they need to fall in love with reading.
My students have also not been in the classroom for a year and a half and I want them to have some fun now that we're back in the classroom.
I want them to be able to find the joy in learning, so I have included items on my list that will help us with some hands on classroom projects.
