My little learners are 5-7 year old special education students from a low-income area. Each of them has been affected by some type of early childhood trauma. Because of these traumatic experiences, my students exhibit behavioral and emotional disabilities and are currently unable to be mainstreamed into general education classrooms.
My learners have a very hard time controlling their emotions and behaviors because of the trauma that they have experienced at such a young age.
They breakdown, exhibit anger, and are often overwhelmed by feelings that they don't completely understand.
Typical textbooks and worksheets may work well for some learners, but my students need alternative learning materials in order to successfully meet their goals.
Because they struggle with regulating their emotions, children who have experienced trauma often can't attend to standard learning methods.
For this reason, I have selected a variety of play-based Math and ELA games that will allow them to have fun as they meet their academic goals.
The colorful, hands-on materials will keep their interest and allow them the freedom to enjoy school while learning and building relationships with their teachers and peers, which is the goal of any trauma informed classroom.
